Depression is a mental disorder, characterized by continued feelings of sadness and lack of interest or enjoyment in daily activities. In addition to mood problems, people with depression are prone to physical symptoms such as fatigue, sleep problems, and changes in appetite. An estimated 14 million Americans suffer from major (or clinical) depression, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Women are twice likely as men suffering from depression, but most of men simply are in denial and coping with alcohol and drugs. Depression, if left untreated, can lead to suicide.
I have suffered from depression for more than 34 years, but was only diagnosed last year as bipolar II, a more severe form of depression. It started in my teenage years. I was shy and introvert with low self esteem, and yet very successful viewed by others. Sixteen years ago I had a couple of severe maniac and depression episodes, and was hospitalized as the result. After a year, I was recovered and thought I was cured. Although in the next 16 years, I had ups and downs, I did not recognize that they were due to my bipolar so I did not seek professional help. A year ago, I was hit with a major depression episode and finally saw a psychiatrist. I was treated as depression, and the treatment triggered an manic episode. Half a year later, I was downsized after working hard and faithfully for the company for 15 years. However, it gave me much needed rest and reflection. With medication and God’s help, I have recovered and am able to experience joy with God, my family, and friends. In October, 2011 I found a job as math teacher in a Christian school. I enjoy this job very much and finally feel at peace.
It is my wish to share my experience to help people who are still suffering silently and desperately. Thank God the medical field has advanced now to the level that most of depression patients can be successfully treated. Unfortunately, ignorance and stigmas have prevented most of them from seeking professional help. I started this ministry in the hope that I will do my part as God enables me to help the suffers and their families and friends to overcome depression. With God’s grace and power, it can be defeated.
